Rugby & Northampton athletics club kicked off the season with a resounding victory in the first UKYDL Midlands Upper match, held in Nottingham. This is a league for U18 and U20 athletes and clubs need to field athletes in all the events.
R & N dominated proceedings from the off with emphatic victories in the 400m hurdles from William Hovell (U18M) and Elliot Godfrey (U20M). This set the tone for the meeting as R & N racked up a whole procession of outstanding performances, with Moyo Stumpenhusen leading the way with a massive 60m throw in the discus – one of the furthest throws ever by a UK athlete. Moyo was backed up by the other throwers in the team, with the female throwers of Grace O’Malley, Chelsea Adams, Emily Gascoigne and Emily Kendrick really showing the way, In the 110m hurdles, Jayden Allen Bramble lept to No 1 on the Uk rankings with a fluent 14.4 secs as well as securing victory in the long jump with a new life-time best of 6m 58.
The track team also excelled with victories coming in all events.
After the gruelling day’s athletics, point were tallied up, leaving R & N victorious – gaining over 150 points more than the second placed team – a combined Coventry and Leamington team
The second of the three regional rounds will take place in Milton Keynes on the 24th May.
