RUGBY & NORTHAMPTON IN THE MEDALS

AT MIDLANDS CHAMPIONSHIPS

Club’s young athletes shine at age group competition in Nuneaton

Rugby & Northampton’s young athletes were among the medals when competing in last weekend’s Midland Age Group Championships in Warwickshire.

There were podium places aplenty for the club’s under-15 and under-17 athletes as they led by Team GB’s Olympic example and racked up the medals at Pingles Stadium, Nuneaton.

The U17s led the way with a trio of golds over track and field. Amy Walker was quickest over 1500 metres to take the title in 5 minutes, 25.15 seconds, with Thomas Lea and Aiden Leeson joining the gold rush. Lea launched the javelin a personal best 48.12 metres for first place, and Leeson triumphed in the 400m with a time of 49.98 seconds.

One medal wasn’t enough for Leeson, who added silver to his collection in the 200 metres. Adam Searle matched the feat with second place in the 1500m steeplechase, crossing the line in 4:35.35 – a new PB – missing out on top spot by just four tenths of a second.

Matthew Broome leaped 6.09m to take silver in the long jump, setting a new PB in the process, while there was bronze for Joshua Faulds in the 400m hurdles (57.26).

There was more silver to come for the U15s in the field events, with Ben Gidley and Maia Reynolds taking the runner-up spots in their respective events.

Gidley threw 42.81m in the javelin, and Reynolds 24.31 in the discus to earn their medals, while Georgina Woodward added bronze with a PB, clearing 2.20m in the pole vault.

Back on the track, Lucy Stevens took third place in the 800m with a PB of 2:26.30, while Mary Beetham-Green mirrored that achievement over 200m in 26.11 to round off another fine weekend for Rugby & Northampton.
