MEDALS FOR BROOME AND MURCH AT AAA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

Rugby & Northampton athletes on top form against the nation’s best at the Senior Championships
Rugby & Northampton athletes achieved gold and bronze medals at the England Athletics AAA & UK CAU Senior Championships over the weekend of Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st July.

Eleanor Broome

The event at Bedford International Athletic Stadium pitted the UK’s best athletes against each other, with five R&N ambassadors on display.
Following her ninth-placed long jump finish at the European Athletics Youth Championships, Eleanor Broome returned to the national stage in dominant style. Her leap of 6.11 metres clinched top spot and the title against an experienced field.
The 17-year-old was the youngest competitor to finish inside the top five, and the win extended Broome’s run of wins on home soil to six consecutive local and national competitions.
Also securing a medal was Craig Murch in the hammer – a throw of 65.37m enough for third-place finish. The 23-year-old’s bronze medal followed his run of four consecutive wins before a sixth-place against the nation’s best at the British Athletics Championships.
On the track, Adam Wright won his 800m heat in one minute and 52.05 seconds, before the 19-year-old went on to register a very credible sixth place in the final in 1:54.05.
Also in action were a pair of R&N athletes in the 100m heats. Kyle Ennis (10.63) finished heat 6 in fourth whilst under-20 athlete Rico Ewer (10.75), fresh from his successful appearance for the England Midlands team in the Welsh International, finished fifth in heat 1.
This weekend sees the final senior league matches of the season with the R&N British Athletics League team hoping to consolidate their second place standing and secure promotion for the 2017 season.
