SESAY RACES FOR SIERRA LEONE
Rugby & Northampton sprinter Adel Sesay represents country on the international stage
The IAAF World Indoor Athletics Championship was hosted in Portland, America on Friday 18th March, where Rugby & Northampton’s Adel Sesay represented home nation Sierra Leone on the international stage.
The 25-year-old prepared in great fashion for the competition having claimed first place for R&N in the 60m at the Sale Harriers Open Series earlier in the month. A time of 7.09 seconds was enough to secure gold that day, and he produced an even better performance this time around.
Following on from his 2014 Commonwealth Games appearance, Sesay lined up in the 60 metre sprint Heat 2 alongside race winner James Dasaolu from Great Britain, Zimbabwe’s Gabriel Mvumvure, Poland’s Remigiusz Olszewski and Shinebayar Damdinchimeg of Mongolia. A time of 7.01 seconds was a season best but unfortunately wasn’t enough to progress in the competition.
Also in action recently was hammer thrower Craig Murch, who continued his faultless start to the season in the Notts AC Throws Festival Open on Thursday 24th March.
The 22-year-old Loughborough University student opened the new campaign in late February with a first-placed finish in the Midland Counties Open Series with a throw of 64.85 metres and his improvement continued last week.
Murch recorded a throw of 66.73 metres to set a new personal and club record on his way to finishing ahead of the rest of his competitors. The outstanding performance was also enough to move Murch to second in the UK rankings, now less than a metre short of top spot.
