Rugby & Northampton AC took part in the second event of the UKYDL Upper Premiership match and came away with an unexpected victory to match successes at the younger age group. The competition at the Rugby track was extremely strong with National standard athletes in many of the events. In the U17 match. Arthur Tilt led the way with an unprecedented treble victory in the 400mH, steeple chase and triple jump. In the 800m races, R & N stormed to a double victory through Louis Starr and Malachy Collins whilst R & N took a clean sweep in all the jumps through Oke Okere, high jump, Ben Smith, pole vault and Zach McKenzie, triple jump.
In the U17 match, Sofia Barrett raced to victory in the 300m as did Ava Rogerson and Isabel Mur with victories in the 3000m and 80mH respectively. Lorna Stenhouse jumped an impressive 1m 58 for victory in the high jump and the day was concluded with a powerful victory in the 4 x 100m relay.
The U20s also performed incredibly well with a whole host of victories. On the track, there were victories for Aidan O’Brien, 800m, and Freddie Clemons, hurdles, whilst George Fox Rowe, high jump and Acelin Smith, javelin, scored victories in the field. The U20 women also turned in with some stellar performances with Catherine Reynolds and Megan Stenhouse racing to victory on the track and Millie Leighton and Lucy Randall scoring gold in the field.
With one match remaining on 26th June at Stoke, the league remains incredibly poised with R & N, Birchfield and the combined Coventry and Leamington team – all on separated by half a match point !
