The young athletes from Rugby & Northampton AC took part in the first West Midlands League cross country event of the year and started with a whole raft of outstanding individual and team performances. The U11 boys started the proceedings with Rex Nicklin and Joe Walden both in the top 10. The U11 girls packed really well with Freya Carty, Elsie Rudkin-Wilson and Scarlett Nicklin all finishing within a few metres of each other. The U13 boys were led by Alex Kampta and Miles Taylor whilst Bella Lamb led in the R & N U13 girls team. The U15 boys saw Freddie Harris and Jack Twining to the fore for R & N but it was the U15 girls who stole the show. Olivia McGhee, fresh from an outstanding track season, won the race, leading from gun to tape and she was followed closely by Peyton Almond in 5th position. The whole team ran well, with all five scorers finishing in the top 30. The U17 boys were led by Ibrahim Achichi, who claimed the bronze medal position whilst Ava Rogerson led home the U17 girls.
The overall team competition was tough with current champions, Wolverhampton and Bilston, to the fore in all of the races but R & N’s strength in depth proved decisive to enable an overall team victory by just 40 points. The second event of the series will take place at Newbold Revell, near Rugby, on November 12th.
