RUGBY & NORTHAMPTON’S WRIGHT SUITS UP FOR GREAT BRITAIN

James Wright produces scintillating performance at international multi-event competition

Rugby & Northampton Under-23 athlete James Wright set numerous personal bests whilst representing Great Britain in the International Combined Events Match on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st February in Salamanca, Spain.

Wright has been one of the Athletic club’s stand-out performers over the last 10* years, holding 21 club records, whilst also competing for Loughborough University where he is currently studying.

The international event matched the best athletes from GB, France and Spain against each other, with the 22-year-old earning his place in the competition following a brilliant performance in the England Athletics U20/Senior Championships earlier this year, which included five top-six finishes.

He followed January’s great results with three personal bests to take his place among the top performers at the event. A long jump of 7.12 metres outscored his previous best by 23 centimetres, while also achieving personal bests in the 60m (7.09 seconds) and indoor high jump (1.84m).

An overall score of 4,899 was enough for sixth spot, courtesy of a 10.74m display in the shot put, 2 minutes 57 seconds for the 1,000m and strong performances in the 60m hurdles (8.47) and pole vault (3.40m).

Wright explained; “My overall score was slightly down on mine from Sheffield in January so I just missed out on an overall personal best, but there were a few very pleasing events in there, especially breaking the seven-metre barrier in long jump for the first time.”

Mark Exley, Rugby & Northampton Athletic Club Chairman, said; “James holds several club records including the indoor heptathlon. He is one of our role models, currently at University and providing inspiration for our younger athletes.”
