Rugby and Northampton AC’s young athletes made the long journey to Stoke for the second match of the Lower YDL on Sunday 19th May. On an extremely hot day the young athletes acquitted themselves very well, with numerous top three places and personal bests. A great all round effort meant that the club secured victory in this match.
As in the first match, the club dominated several events, scoring maximum points in five track events and four field events, plus winning three relays. On the track Mary Taylor and Elsa Gordon gained maximum points in the under 15 Girls’ 300m, as did Jess Lamb and Merryn Hutchins-Morant in the under 15 Girls’ 800m and Bella Lamb and Amelia Lee in the under 13 Girls’ 800m. Maximum points also came from Harry Rogers and David Allen in the under 13 Boys’ 75m and Joe Walden and Robert Copeland in the under 13 Boys’ 75m Hurdles. The under 15 Girls scored a relay double first place in the 4x100m and the 4x300m, while the under 13 Boys’ 4x100m team also stormed to victory. In the field events, maximum points were achieved by Charlie Cook and Harry Matthews in the under 15 Boys’ Javelin, Ludo Lindsay and Joe Walden in the under 13 Boys’ High Jump, James Taylor and Harry Rogers in the under 13 Boys’ Shot and Amarachi Okwara and Martha Lee in the under 13 Girls’ Shot. In addition there were a further five individual victories in track events, and a further ten in field events. It was a brilliant performance all round from the club’s young athletes.
With one match remaining Rugby and Northampton AC are at the top of the league table. We eagerly anticipate the final match at Loughborough on Sunday 16th June.
