R&N AC took a decent squad of thirty to the Upper Age Group District Final of the YDL on Sunday 7th August. Yate once again hosted in their superbly equipped stadium complex.
Highlights included wins for George Fox-Rowe in the long jump, Millie Leighton in the triple jump, Ben Smith in steeplechase and Charlotte Bowers in the hammer. Catherine Reynolds took first spot in both 200m and 400m.
Will Gand leapt to a fine triple jump pb and there were also pbs for Cerise Alfandary in javelin, Charlie Gibbs in 800m, Morrie Parker in 400m and Matthew Ward in the shot. Meanwhile there were double pbs for Charlotte Bowers in discus and hammer and for Efua Boateng in 100m and long jump.
Most striking was the can-do attitude of the squad. This was exemplified by, for example, the willingness of athletes to switch events at late notice, or put themselves forwards for additonal events (Adam Farrow would probably have taken on ten events if he’d been allowed!) Thomas Brinkley tackled and made a good fist of steeplechase for the first time. The stand-out, though, was Kreshaun Thompson capping a leg of the U17 4x100m with a starring role in the U20 4x100m!
Under sweltering conditions, it was far from ideal for all, particularly the middle distance athletes. It was also especially gruelling for our superb squad of helpers and officials, toiling without shelter from the sun for many hours. Thanks to those who served the club in this way: it’s very much appreciated.
In something of a transitional year, R&N AC finished a comfortable fifth on the day. Next year we have the realistic prospect of a National Final to look forward to.
