Heart of England provides silver-lining for Rugby & Northampton Athletic Club

Club take second place finish at latest meeting

Rugby & Northampton Athletic Club’s young stars combined to help the squad to joint-second in the latest Heart of England League meeting.

The under-11, under-13, under-15 and under-17 teams all produced a string of good results in the Division One fixture at Coventry on Sunday to see R&N tie with hosts Coventry Godiva while Stratford took the overall victory.

R&N’s male teams took second in their section with the age group teams all performing well. The under-11s, who operate outside the main scoring, took first place while the under-13s and under-15s finished second in the breakdown with the under-17s third.

Sachin Thethy was a winner in the under-11 long jump B thanks to a jump of 3.8m, 0.1m behind team-mate Luke Gosling (3.9m), who finished third in the A category. Jake Hope (2.02.3) and Ollie Scott (2.09.4) both finished fourth in the 600m A and B races respectively, while Luke Gosling (29.9) and Ollie Scott (23.18) both finished third in the howler in the A and B categories.

The under-13s recorded double victories in the discus and 1500m with Ben Gidley (15.35m) and Alfie Bowers (15.21m) taking the honours in the A and B throws, while on the track, Ben Hope (4:59.1) and Isaac Thorman (5:01.7) were first over the finish line in their respective groups. Bowers picked up another win in the shot with a throw of 5.96m and added to that with third place in the 75m hurdles A race (13.5).

Their points-scoring efforts were backed up by Josh Lambert (200m A 6th, 30.9; 100m B 3rd, 14.9), Archie Jackson (200m B, 5th, 31.3; long jump A 6th 4.07m), Cian Hutton (long jump B 3rd, 3.89m; 800m A 4th, 2:36.1), Ben Gidley (shot put A 5th, 6.24m), Christopher Mayes (100m A 6th, 14.4), Edward Faulds (75m hurdles B 3rd, 16.2), and Daniel Carey (800m 5th, 2:42.5). The 4x100m relay team of Lambert, Sam Holdsworth, Faulds and Mayes finished sixth with a time of 61.3.

It was certainly the under-15s’ day as they picked up an impressive six individual victories and also won the 4x100m relay to cap a successful event for the team.

Thomas Haynes (2:18.3) and Rhys James (2:20.3) were first over the finish line in the 800m A and B races respectively with Harry Mason (13.0) claiming the 80m hurdles B honours. Aidan Leeson (12.0) won the 100m A race, while Matthew Rushton (4:47.8) and Ethan Kent-Whittaker (4:55.6) led the way in the respective 1500m events. The relay team of Joshua Faulds, Samuel Tait, Thomas Jasper and Leeson took the spoils with a time of 48.8.

Points were also contributed by Faulds (long jump A 6th, 4.59m; 400m B 5th, 63.2), Toros Ercan (long jump B 6th, 4.14m), Jay O’Leary (80m hurdles A 2nd, 12.1), Samuel Tutt (shot put A 2nd, 10.33m; 100m B 2nd, 12.6), George Bowers (shot put B 7th, 6.69m; discus A 8th, 16.37m), Jack Carey (high jump A 8th, 1.40m; 400m A 5th, 61.0), Thomas Jasper (discus B 6th, 13.98m; 200m A 2nd, 24.4), and Harry Mason (200m B 6th, 27.4).

Luca Franchi and Freddie Taylor were R&N’s two winners in the under-17 competition – Franchi taking the discus A with 36.39m while Taylor was first in the 100m hurdles A in a time of 14.9.

Their efforts were supported by Connor Aldridge (800m A 3rd, 2:12.3; 400m A 3rd, 53.5), Jonjo Fanning (discus B 2nd, 25.54m; 100m hurdles B 2nd, 18.1), Tom Cheyne (long jump A 5th, 4.90m), Joe Musgrove (long jump B 3rd, 4.36m; 1500m B 3rd, 4:33.4), Zachary Stapleton (100m A 3rd, 11.8; 200m A 4th, 24.1), Alex Hinds (100m B 2nd, 11.8; 200m B 2nd, 24.7), Ben Musgrove (400m B 5th, 59.2; 1500m A 3rd, 4:27.0), while the 4x100m relay team of Fanning, Hinds, Cheyne and Stapleton finished fourth in a time of 49.0.

R&N’s females finished fifth in the team standings with the the under-13s finishing fourth, the under-15s clocking in sixth and the under-17s taking fourth in the age group breakdowns. In the separate competition, the under-11s took first place.

Megan Burge took a triple victory in the Under-11s as she led the howler A (24.56), the long jump A (3.89m) and the 75m (11.5). Zoe Gardner was also in form, winning the howler B (22.00), long jump B (3.4m) and 600m A (2.02.5). Grace Hughes also took victory for R&N, completing the 600m B in 2.06.7.

Abigail Ward was a winner for the under-13s as she took first place in the 800m A race with a time of 2:39.5.

Other points came from Holly Walker (1500m A 2nd, 5:28.7), Iola Grant (70m hurdles A 4th, 13.2; high jump A 5th, 1.24m), Fenella Downes (70m hurdles B 3rd, 13.3; 200m B 3rd, 30.5), Alice Jackson (800m B 2nd, 2:44.6; long jump A 8th, 3.58m), Abigail Smith (100m A 6th, 14.6), Amelia Tutt (100m B 5th, 15.7; shot put A 6th, 5.07m), Victoria Merrey (discus A 7th, 12.68m; shot put B 3rd, 4.94m), Lucy Moore (discus B 2nd, 11.66m), and Mary Beetham Green (long jump B 7th, 3.23m; 200m A 7th, 31.1).

The under-13 4x100m relay team of Merrey, Green, Smith and Tutt placed sixth in a time of 61.0.

Amy Walker and Olivia White were the winners for the under-15s as they returned times of 5:12.1 and 5:13.6 to win the 1500m A and B races respectively.

Further points for the under-15 team came from Lucy Laight (discus A 7th, 14.60m; 100m B 2nd, 13.7; shot put A 7th, 7.13m), Annousha Salehi (75m hurdles A 4th, 12.8), Hollie Moore (high jump A, 1.25m), Alice Grocott (long jump A 7th, 3.80m; 300m B 3rd, 46.1), Freya Cole (long jump B 8th, 3.51; shot put B 8th, 4.31m), Angharrad Wylie (800m A 6th, 2:36.5), Lauren Nash (800m B 2nd, 2:34.2), Laurone Ager (100m A 4th, 13.5; 200m B 2nd, 27.5), and Mia Rudman (300m A 4th, 44.0; 200m A 4th, 28.3).

The under-15 girls of Ager, Rudman, Laight/Danielle Jasper and Salehi were rewarded with second place in the 4x100m relay after posting a time of 52.2.

Milan Clues bagged two wins for the under-17s by finishing first in the B catagories of both the discus (21.51m) and the shot (8.49m). Kirsty Gooddard was also first over the finishing line as she took the 1500m B race in 5:05.7, while Emma Bond (4.59.3) was runner-up in the A race.

The under-17s’ points tally was added to by Brittany Wood (80m hurdles A 5th, 13.3), Katie Bryant (80m hurdles B 3rd, 13.5), Nicole Johnson (800m A 7th, 2:46.8), Harriet Sumnall (shot put A 5th, 9.14m; discus A 3rd, 25.82), Tia Clues (100m A 4th, 13.5; long jump A 2nd, 4.71m), Charlotte Norman (100m B 4th, 13.7), Natalie Goddard (300m A 5th, 46.5), and Lauren Byrd (200m A 7th, 29.9).

In the 4x100m relay the team of Byrd, Clues, Goddard and Freya Cole finished sixth having recorded a time of 57.2.
