RUGBY & NORTHAMPTON PRODUCE STELLAR ROAD RELAY RACE

Athletics club finish 11th in Midlands Womens 6 Stage Road Relay

Rugby & Northampton produced an excellent performance to finish 11th in the Midlands Womens 6 Stage Road Relay on Saturday at Sutton Park, Birmingham.

The event – consisting of two 5.38-mile legs and four short stages of 3.165 miles – was started in emphatic style by Gabriella Moriarty. The 22-year-old performed well in the recently finished cross country season and continued that fine form to complete the first long leg in 34 minutes and 55 seconds, for 12th spot.

Tilly Lea tackled the second leg, completing the short course in 27:05 before Lorna Latimer covered the 5.38-mile third section in 38:50.

The squad was boosted by the return of Emily Waugh, who was the fastest athlete on leg four despite not having raced for almost six months. She completed the short course in 18:50 to gain eight places, completing the day as the sixth fastest of all athletes taking part.

Waugh handed over to Minerva Chesser on the fifth leg who recorded a time of 24:27 over the 3.165 mile track, before veteran international Angela Copson rounded off the team performance with a run of 20:42 to secure the team’s 11th-place finish.
